In today’s world, it feels nearly impossible to avoid the weight of everything happening around us. The political climate is intense, the news cycle is relentless, and social media is a constant flood of crises, injustices, and debates.

If you’re someone who deeply feels the emotions of others—whether it’s your colleagues, friends, or even strangers suffering across the globe—you might be experiencing empathy burnout without even realizing it.

What Is Empathy Burnout?

Empathy burnout occurs when our emotional capacity to care and support others becomes overwhelmed to the point of exhaustion. Unlike general stress or fatigue, empathy burnout stems from absorbing too much of others’ emotions, often leaving us feeling drained, powerless, or even numb. It’s common among caregivers, therapists, and leaders, but today, more professionals than ever are experiencing it simply by engaging with the world around them.

Signs You Might Be Experiencing Empathy Burnout

✔ Emotional exhaustion – You feel mentally and emotionally drained from keeping up with political events and social issues.
✔ Difficulty focusing – You struggle to concentrate at work because your mind is occupied with the latest news.
✔ Increased anxiety or frustration – You feel constantly on edge, helpless, or even resentful about the state of the world.
✔ Compassion fatigue – You start to feel numb or detached from suffering because your emotional reserves are depleted.
✔ Guilt for setting boundaries – You feel like disengaging means you don’t care, even though you know you need a break.

If you recognize any of these symptoms, it’s time to take action to protect your emotional well-being. Caring about the world is important, but you can’t help others if you’re running on empty.

How to Protect Your Energy Without Shutting Down

1. Set Boundaries Around News & Social Media

Limit your exposure to emotionally triggering content by:

  • Designating specific times to check the news instead of constantly refreshing.
  • Muting triggering keywords or accounts on social media that drain you.
  • Unfollowing or limiting interactions with people who provoke unnecessary emotional stress.

2. Recognize What Is & Isn’t Yours to Carry

Ask yourself:

  • “Is this my burden to fix, or can I advocate without emotionally absorbing it?”
  • “Can I make an impact without compromising my own well-being?” Sometimes, the best way to help is to support existing initiatives, donate, or amplify voices—without carrying the weight alone.

3. Prioritize Self-Compassion & Rest

  • Take intentional breaks from heavy topics without guilt.
  • Engage in grounding activities like meditation, nature walks, or journaling.
  • Surround yourself with uplifting content—books, podcasts, or conversations that restore hope.

4. Find Healthy Ways to Process Your Emotions

Instead of suppressing what you feel, channel it in ways that help you move through it:

  • Express it through creativity (writing, music, art).
  • Talk to a trusted friend or therapist who understands your emotional depth.
  • Practice mindfulness exercises that allow you to release emotions without holding onto them.

5. Join a Supportive Community

You’re not alone in this. Finding a space where you can connect with others who understand empathy burnout can be incredibly healing. That’s why I’m hosting a free LinkedIn workshop on Thursday, February 6: “You’re Too Empathetic: A Workshop for Empaths & Deep Feelers.” If you’ve been feeling emotionally exhausted from everything happening in the world, this session will help you reset and build strategies to protect your energy.

Final Thoughts: You Deserve to Protect Your Peace

Empathy burnout doesn’t mean you care too much—it means you haven’t been given the tools to care sustainably. Protecting your energy isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. By setting boundaries, prioritizing rest, and finding ways to process your emotions, you can continue showing up for what matters—without losing yourself in the process.
